What Makes Epoxy a Good Adhesive?

Epoxy may be known for amazing flooring, cool-looking bar tops, and amazing art projects, but did you know it also is an amazing adhesive? Epoxy is good for bonding wood, most metals, some plastics, and other items together. It creates a permanent bond that is virtually unbreakable.

This is handy for boat work, woodworking, artwork, and so much more. It can be helpful to understand what makes epoxy a good adhesive, so you know if it is what works best for your project.

Let’s take a look at what makes epoxy a good adhesive.

What is epoxy?

Epoxy has two parts that mix together to create a chemical reaction. These parts are the resin and the hardener. Once the resin and hardener are mixed together, the curing process begins.

During the curing process, the molecular chains react with each other creating an exothermic reaction. This causes covalent bonds to occur, causing a cross-linking of the polymer and creating the rigidity and strength that epoxy is known for. This strength and rigidity are one aspect of epoxies adhesive qualities that make it an excellent choice for so many projects.

Why is it a good adhesive?

Epoxy does more than just have a chemical reaction within itself to create the hard finish you expect. It also creates a chemical bond. The epoxy gets into the pores of the material. When it cures, it creates an unbreakable bond with the material.

Is there anything epoxy is not a good adhesive for?

Epoxy is a wonderful choice for holding many items together. It is a favorite for woodworking and boat work. Still, everything has its limits, and epoxy is no exception. There are some materials that epoxy cannot chemically bond with, usually because they are non-porous.

In the case of metal, epoxy can be used after it has been scuffed. Epoxy does not adhere to most plastics. Instead, it slides off and creates a mess. You will need to check on your specific type of plastic to know for sure if it will work or not.
